The shortage of referees for the upcoming Football CQ season will be more than first thought after the refereeing group meet for the first time in 2010 last night (Wednesday) at a CQU conference room.
Preliminary estimates already suggested that a lack of numbers at tonights sign on would be an issue as quite a number of both senior and junior referees have given refereeing away for a number of reasons both personal and work related.
Rockhampton football has produced some class international officials over time in Mark Shield and Jacque Leleu but that fact doesn't hold the competition together. Its no secret that football all over the world needs to retain mature age people within refereeing ranks who just want to put something back into the game.
It maybe part of the culture to abuse the referee whatever happens but that has to change if this issue is going to find a solution. This problem is not a refereeing issue, as any solution doesn't lie with the refereeing fraternity, but more so for the football fraternity as a whole.Anyone thinking about refereeing in this area could not find more qualified coaches anywhere so why don't prospective referees come forward. The answer maybe the amount of abuse they get because it is difficult to handle in the first couple of seasons.
There are a couple of cases from last season that specifically stick as unacceptable and it seems as though the "guilty" parties didn't understand what they did wrong. Perhaps if no one turned up to control their matches they might understand but then again maybe they wouldn't.
Anyone interested in refereeing during 2010 should do one of two things -
Either come to tonights meeting at the CQU Conference Room in the courtyard next to the coffee shop, call in to the Football CQ office in High Street to register their interest or contact Referee Recruitment Officer, Greg Newman, on 0412144226.
